Data Protection Made Easy: July’s Rundown

Episode 177: RoPA Roundup – DPO Workshop

If you handle personal data, you’re legally required to document your processing activities. Records of Processing Activities (ROPA) allow you to keep a stock of your data, including where and what you do with it. Think of it as a map keeping you on track to GDPR compliance

ROPAs demonstrate your accountability, a key data protection principle ensuring data processing remains aligned with GDPR.

In episode 177, we held an interactive workshop for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) who want to complete ROPAs within their organisation. Our hosts, Jasmine, Joe and Phil, discussed ROPA fundamentals, requirements and best practices. We also covered how to audit an existing ROPA and eliminate any unnecessary admin that can impact a DPO

This session was great fun, so catch up now and listen to episode 177 on Spotify

Part two of our ROPA workshop will come out on August 2nd.

Episode 178: GDPR Radio – What Is Classed as Personal Use Processing?

Our host, Joe, invited Caine Glancy, our Data Protection Support Desk Team Leader, to dive into the latest GDPR news, covering data breaches and industry updates.

After covering recent news, we focused on personal use processing, which refers to handling someone’s personal data based on lawful grounds.

Processing personal data can include various activities—some of which businesses may not know. Examples include sending marketing emails, recording IP addresses, video recording and managing staff payroll. With so many instances, it can be easy to let things fall through the cracks and cause a GDPR breach.

Don’t put yourself at risk. Head to episode 178 for an overview of personal data processing and compliance tips.

Episode 179: DPIA Deep Dive – A Practical Guide on Data Protection Impact Assessments

Along with Caine and Jasmine, we brought on Laura Bretnall, Support Desk Manager, to share their expert insight on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).

Like ROPAs, DPIAs are crucial to accountability obligations. They involve reviewing, identifying and mitigating data protection risks associated with a project or plan.

Under Article 35(1) of the UK GDPR, businesses must do a DPIA if the processing activity may likely result in a high risk to a person’s rights and freedoms. These operations include using innovative technologies, geolocation or behaviour tracking, targeting young children and vulnerable adults, etc.

Episode 179 covers our host’s top DPIA tips and insights, along with a Q&A time for our dedicated listeners. Listen to our guide now to learn more

Episode 180: GDPR Radio – Schools, Scams and State Control

We ended July with a second episode covering data protection news of the week with our live audience of listeners.

If you work in the education sector, this is a great opportunity to understand the errors made by the recent data breach within Northern Ireland’s education department. Listen to episode 180 now
