Data Security Protection Toolkit (DSPT) – Understanding The Changes 

On this week’s episode of the Data Protection Made Easy Podcast, our hosts, Oliver Rear and David Holmes joined the brilliant Barry Moult, a well-known face in the healthcare sector to discuss the Data Security Protection Toolking (DSPT). The DSPT is an online self-assessment tool created by the NHS for healthcare organisations to measure their performance against the National Data Guardian’s 10 data security standards. There have been a number of changes to the DSPT over the last year, during this week’s episode of our podcast, Barry will share knowledge and insights on the changes made in preparation for your following assessment.

What is the DSPT? 

The Data Security Protection Toolkit or DSPT is an annual requirement issued by the NHS, it’s an online self-assessment that allows organisations to measure their performance against the National Data Guardian’s Data Security Standards.

Who must comply with the DSPT?

All Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered organisations must comply with the Data Protection Security Toolkit. This is an annual requirement that must be completed every year. If you provide services under the NHS, the likelihood is you will be caught by the requirement.

If you are not a member of the CQC the DSPT can still be an incredibly useful tool for organisations who want to improve their data protection and cyber security processes.

What is the deadline for completing the Data Protection Security Toolkit? 

If your organisation falls into the categories above then you will be required to complete the Data Security Protection Toolkit by the 30th of June each year. The assessment can take place long before the deadline as long as all processes are in order.

If you would like to register your organisation for the DSPT, you will need a valid email address and your organisational code, you will then be taken through a few questions before you start your self-assessment.
