GDPR Radio – New Year New Views

The data protection landscape is constantly evolving and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest news and developments. That’s why we’re excited to kick off the new year with our first live podcast of the year, where we discuss the data protection news that occurred over the festive period and look forward to 2023, sharing our predictions on the future of data protection. This week’s episode was hosted by Phil Brining and David Holmes.

Phil discussed his recent involvement with the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) and shared his thoughts on the ICO’s new website. He mentioned how he had a quick visit to London and shared his insights and observations with the audience. They also discussed the Royal Mail ransomware attack and the organization’s potential learning from the attack. They pointed out that there isn’t a lot of information available yet, but it would be interesting to see what comes out of it in terms of learning for the organisation and how they can reflect on it.

During the podcast, our hosts also covered the regular enforcement action taken by the ICO against the UK mobile operators organisation, which operates on behalf of UK mobile operators. This organisation has a spam alert message service, where users can report spam text messages by forwarding them to a specific number and spelling out the word “spam.” The host and producer discussed how this organisation works with the Information Commissioner’s Office and provides them with monthly threat assessment reports, giving the ICO access to data that can help them better understand and address spam and other data protection issues.

In addition to discussing current events and specific enforcement actions, the podcast also provided valuable insights and tips for data protection practitioners. They discussed the importance of staying up to date on the latest developments and best practices in data protection and emphasized the need for organisations to take proactive steps to protect personal data and comply with GDPR and other relevant regulations.

Overall, the first episode of 2023 provided a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and trends in data protection and offered valuable insights and guidance for practitioners looking to stay compliant and protect personal data. With a lively discussion and a wide range of topics covered, it was a great way to kick off the new year and ease back into the GDPR radio series.
